Push-Ups in a Strong Tide!

A huge thanks to Libby Jagessar, for donating to Stop Soldier Suicide, an organization that works to reduce the rate of suicide among veterans and active duty soldiers! In return, I do 22 push-ups in the waves, on the beach during a strong current. 🙂

All joking aside, there was a pretty intense rip current this day, which plays a big role in choosing a semi-protected bay as the place to do these push-ups. I had already had a moment earlier in the day, where a knee-high wave took me to the ground and had its way with me. As luck would have it, I just got washed onto the beach that time, but decided not to play any games with the sea for the rest of the day. Not for nothing they call this coast la Costa Brava (the Angry Coast).

Thanks again, Libby! Enjoy the push-ups!

Push-Ups on Playa La Ropa, Zihuatanejo, Mexico!

Sarah & Jason each donated to Stop Soldier Suicide, an organization that works to reduce the rate of suicide among soldiers and veterans.

A big thanks to both of you, Sarah & Jason!

These guys requested push-ups on the beach and I just happen to live near where they recently vacationed. Some say coincidence, some say fate. 🙂

Sarah, Jason – here are 22 push-ups on Playa La Ropa, Zihuatanejo, with a view towards your vacation getaway in the background! Enjoy!

About Soldier Suicide

As of the writing of this page, in late May of 2016, a social media campaign is underway to raise awareness concerning the rate of suicide among active duty soldiers and veterans. This rate has been quoted as roughly 22 suicides per day. This number is controversial due to the sampling method used in the report that sparked this campaign and is likely incorrect.

Be that as it may, even the most conservative estimate of soldier suicide, at roughly one per day is considerably higher than that of the average civilian.

Organizations exist to help soldiers deal with the complex issues that can lead to suicide. Several of them are listed below. While raising awareness can be a good thing, ensuring that the organizations that provide direct services to soldiers have sufficient funding to carry out their work is arguably more effective.

To that end, you can donate to them and then go on living your life. Your donation will have a more tangible effect than your awareness.

We lead busy lives and can only maintain awareness of those things that most directly impact us. The rest fade quickly into the background. That’s okay. That’s the way things are. But if an issue, like soldier suicide, crosses your path and makes you want to do something, then please – donate.

For your donation, I’ll do something fun in return.

My friend David Cooper recently nominated me for the 22 push-up challenge. I took it up, but because of my feelings on raising awareness versus more concrete actions like donating to the organizations listed below, I issued another challenge.

Make a donation to an organization that works to reduce and prevent soldier suicide and post an image of the receipt of that donation to my Facebook wall or in the comments of this blog and I’ll do 22 push-ups in your name and in that of the organization to which you donated.

To make this more entertaining, I won’t just do the boring push-ups that you might do any old day at the gym or in your living room. I’ll incorporate something fun into them.

So far, I’ve done push-ups while a goat ate off my back. I’ve done push-ups with a chicken on my back and with a four-year-old clinging to my back. I’ve done them on my knuckles in the middle of the street. One person requested a set in a tree. When I have the opportunity, I’ll try to do some underwater. Just something fun and silly that you can share with your friends and that makes your donation a little more entertaining.

So if you’re reading this, then please, make a donation. Make me push.

Here is a list of organizations you can donate to;

Stop Soldier Suicide

Check out the posts below for the push-ups that I’ve done for people’s donations so far. Enjoy!

Push-ups to Muscle Failure

Kristy and George Beitey, two tremendously great people and the parents of my friend Dustan, with whom I served in the 82nd Airborne, have donated to organizations that work to lessen the rate of suicide among soldiers and veterans.

The motto of the 82nd Airborne is “All the way!” and Kristy & George exemplified this when they donated to not one, but seven (!) organizations: Stop Soldier Suicide, the National Veteran’s Foundation, Elder Heart, the National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide, the American Legion, the Warrior’s Heart Foundation AND Active Heroes!

First of all, Kristy, George, thank you!! You go above and beyond.

Second, if I was to do one set of 22 push-ups for each of your donations, as I’ve been doing for every other person’s donation so far, that would amount to a whopping 154 push-ups, which is superhuman even by airborne standards. The most fitting way that I can think of to repay you is to just keep pushing until my muscles give out. It might have been better to take on this particular challenge earlier in this campaign, but what can you do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kristy, George & everyone else watching, enjoy the push-ups and keep donating!

Push-Ups to Push It (NSFW)

My friend Micaela donated to Stop Soldier Suicide, an organization that works to prevent suicide among veterans and active duty soldiers. Thank you, Micaela!

This whole campaign of using push-ups to help fund organizations like Stop Soldier Suicide got her thinking of another kind of pushing – specifically the pushing that comes with birthing. This led her to do a little research and she discovered that postpartum depression, self harm, and suicide are significantly higher among female soldiers and the wives and partners of soldiers than in the general population.

For more information about this, check out Postpartum Support International’s section on the military.

Micaela suggested that for her contribution, I push it to the song Push It, by Salt ‘n’ Peppa. She also suggested that if I really wanted to make this set of push-ups in any small way more like labor, I should do it nude with a bunch of people staring at my nethers. Well…

In honor of Micaela’s contribution and to raise awareness for the high rate of suicide among the women serving in our armed forces, I will now push it nude to Push It.

I usually do 22 push-ups for these things, but my videographer & I didn’t communicate well on where we would stop the music, so I do something closer to 50. Get strong! =P

Keep donating and keep me pushing!
